Continual evaporation in the steam-generating unit increases the dissolved solids content of the boiler water.
If this is not kept to a low level, sediment and scale build up throughout the steam system.

Increased maintenance shutdown and costs due to the requirement to service scaled-up products
Decreased production efficiency as heat transfer to critical process becomes less effective
