Suitability of electrical equipment

The suitability of electrical equipment depends on various factors:

  • Location of use
  • Ambient conditions
  • Transport
  • Storage

For assessment according to individual criteria, please note the relevant standards or approved code of practice:

  • Protection classes to IEC 529 or DIN EN 60 529
  • EMC, immunity and radiated emissions to EN 61000
  • Shock and vibration testing to DIN IEC 60068

The protection classes are indicated by the international code (IP = International Protection). There are two digits before the abbreviation IP. The first digit indicates protection against the ingress of solid objects. The second digit denotes the level of protection against the ingress of water. This information is based on an unmodified housing and does not take into consideration influences such as ageing or changing temperatures. Example of an IP code: IP 65

Code letters (International Protection): IP
First digit (protection against solid objects): 6
Second digit (protection against water): 5
